Description

Bunny Ear Cactus – A Playful Prickly Companion

Native to Mexico’s arid regions, Bunny Ear Cactus grows in pairs of flat, oval pads—earning its nickname thanks to its resemblance to a rabbit’s head. Instead of long spines, it has tiny bristle clusters (glochids) that form polka dot-like patterns in yellow, white, or reddish-brown, depending on the variety.

While it’s cute, don’t be fooled—the glochids can still irritate skin if touched. Handle with care and admire from a distance!

In ideal conditions, this cactus can produce creamy yellow flowers in spring, followed by reddish-purple fruit.

Plant Care Tips

Light:
Loves bright, direct sunlight. Place near a south- or west-facing window, or outdoors in full sun.

Watering:
Water deeply but infrequently—only when the soil is completely dry. In winter, reduce watering to once a month or less.

Soil:
Use a fast-draining cactus mix. Avoid regular potting soil, which retains too much moisture.

Temperature:
Thrives in warm temperatures (21–30°C). Tolerates dry heat well but is not frost-hardy.

Humidity:
Prefers dry environments. Keep away from high-humidity spots like bathrooms.

Fertilizer:
Feed once a month during spring and summer with a cactus fertilizer diluted to half strength.

Common Problems Faced

Overwatering: The #1 issue—causes root rot. Always let soil dry fully before watering again.

Glochid Contact: While it looks fuzzy, avoid touching! Use tongs or gloves when handling.

Stretching (Etiolation): Happens in low light. Move to a brighter, sunnier location.

Pests: Rare, but may attract spider mites or scale. Treat with neem oil if needed.
